Artforum, April 20, 2017- Andy Campbell
The Pit is pleased to announce Seizure Crevasse a solo exhibition by New York based artist Jennie Jieun Lee. This is her first solo exhibition in Los Angeles. Seizure Crevasse will consist of her signature ceramic masks, busts, and large-scale vessels as well as an installation that will take over the gallery. The exhibition will be on view and open to the public March 12 to April 23, 2017 with an opening reception on Sunday, March 12 from 4-7pm.
Jennie Jieun Lee is known for her evocative, visceral ceramics composed of organic freely thrown forms, encased in layers of oozing glaze; often times bringing forth conversations about abstract painting in relationship to the history of ceramics. The works center on emotional and psychological states conveyed through the use of color, action, and form; Lee names the works after personal histories, which inform her practice. Lee cites the work of Charles Burchfield, the music of Milford Graves, and the ceramics of Joan Miro as recent inspirations to her latest body of work.
The show’s title references an involuntary reaction due to stress, which has resulted in fissures, found throughout her work. Lee’s predominant use of black and dark tones of clay acts as a metaphor for the dark side of history, or the landscape of the nation in upheaval with increasing reports of violence motivated by racism.
